Future mobility: Core technologies for autonomous driving

With the experience of a billion kilometers driven “by-wire,” Schaeffler Paravan supports leading manufacturers in the automotive industry in bringing autonomous and partially autonomous test vehicles, prototypes, and functional models on the road safely with a multi-redundant drive-by-wire system. This system is approved for official road use in accordance with the EU standards ECE R10, ECE R13, and ECE R79., With its proven reliable and safe control of primary vehicle functions, Paravan offers an important technology that serves as a basis for ensuring increased safety in the autonomous vehicles of the future. The automotive industry has been developing assistance and sensor systems for some time now. Using radar, lasers, cameras, etc., these systems provide guidance and decision-making support in automated driving applications. Space Drive now offers you the opportunity to actually use these systems on the road or in an off-road setting for the first time. Space Drive features the only technology with road-approved redundancy that genuinely executes signals such as “now accelerate – swerve – brake.” What’s more, it does this reliably and in fractions of a second, which makes Space Drive the only system of its kind in the world. Schaeffler Paravan has already equipped more than 100 partially and fully autonomous prototypes with the fail-safe Space Drive driving and steering system.

Levels of automation

    Highly automated. The driver has to constantly monitor the system. However, the vehicle autonomously performs certain functions such as activating turn signals, changing lanes, and staying in lane. If necessary, the system will, within a predefined warning period, request that the driver intervene and take control of the Vehicle.

    Nearly full automation The system permanently controls the vehicle. If the system is for some reason no longer able to properly operate the vehicle, it can request that the driver intervene and take Control.

Off-Highway Applications

Off the road: Driverless driving also possible from a second control station.

Safe technology: Space Drive enables vehicle operation in critical situations without anybody sitting in the cockpit. The driver gets out of the vehicle, activates the radio remote control, and controls the vehicle from the outside. This is ideal for humanitarian missions, military operations, or travel on extreme terrain:

Special-purpose vehicles

Local authorities already use Space Drive technology in their fleets. In addition, a great deal of interest in the technology has been expressed by the agricultural community, and drive-by-wire is also gaining recognition among logistics companies and depot operators. Examples of situations in which conventional driving can be combined with remote control or programmed procedures include:

  • Deploying mowers on steep slopes
  • Operation of auto cranes, concrete pumps, tracked vehicles, etc.
  • Maneuvering of large loads in confined spaces – heavy haulage
  • Using special tractors for wine-growing applications – extreme slopes

Driverless test systems and autonomous “hare vehicles”

Endurance and precision for special tasks

The redundant Space Drive drive-by-wire system is perfect for testing autonomous vehicles and sensor technology. The typical applications here are endurance tests (e.g. 24-hour tests), dynamic tests (durability tests), dynamic sensor tests, ADAS evaluations, vehicle misuse tests, and high-speed tests. The Schaeffler Paravan system can also be used in autonomous test drives to control “hare vehicles” – i.e. vehicles ahead in autonomous tandems. Recorded test tracks can be stored by the True Track system from Schaeffler Paravan, reproduced any number of times, and thus be driven in exactly the same manner. The vehicles can be stopped at any time from a control center or via a remote control device. The system can also be used as a retrofit solution for nearly all vehicle types.

Industrial applications

A wide range of possible applications for Space Drive exist beyond the automotive sector. Multifunctional motor control via LIN, CAN, or FlexRay, by laptop or remote control, is ideal for partially and fully automated processes:

Vehicles modified for people with disabilities

Space Drive is a system that is unrivaled in the world – a true breakthrough. It already allows thousands of people around the world to drive with a disability, including people with low residual strength, higher-level paraplegia, minimum movement capabilities, and even no arms or legs. With Space Drive, you activate the brake, accelerator, and steering wheel (and of course all other functions) using driving aids controlled by microprocessors. The latter transmit signals in fractions of a second to two servo motors for the brake and the accelerator, and two other motors for the steering system (drive by wire). We configure the separate modules individually, and we will readjust the software and hardware as needed if your clinical situation changes.
